Frequently
asked
questions

What is the minimum enrollment age?
The general rule is eight, but kids are kind of tricky. Some reach the needed attention span sooner and have a motivation that inspires a bit more maturity. Thus we can make exceptions for those that are one, possibly two, years younger and they will be evaluated during a trial period.

How much does it cost?
That's doesn't have a simple answer. Click here: Cost
Do I have to be in good shape?
You just need the ability to get in good shape. See Program.
Do we break boards?
Board breaking is for advanced students and is used for special training.
Is karate for a certain type of person?
There is a misconception that there is a prerequisite toughness required. Movies suggest that karate demands gifted people, who advance to become superhuman. We are ordinary people of different ages who go to school and/or work without any theatrics. We are like you plus have an enthusiasm for Tae Kwon Do.
What are the ranks?
White, yellow, green, purple, brown, high brown, and then nine levels of black. Progress shows and it is yours alone, without having to match the talents and experience of others. But you will improve.

How do I select a karate school?
You may not be familiar with martial arts, but you are familiar with how you learn. Visit the school and ask yourself:

  • Can I learn from these instructors?
  • Is this an inviting setting?
  • What is the experience/background of the instructors?
  • Can the teachers communicate?
  • Does it demand a long-term financial commitment?

How does a novice start class?
Just show up! That's how we all began, and people may do so at any time. Tae Kwon Do classes are not like other courses with a fixed starting date. We take you from where you are and "the path to black belt begins here".

What is Tae Kwon Do?
Tae Kwon do is a Martial Art, the origin of which dates back thousands of years to a time when weaponless fighting was prevalent in countries throughout Asia. It has been practiced for over 2,000 years. Today, Tae Kwon Do is taught primarily as a sport and means of self-defense.

The term breaks down into: Tae; means to jump or kick with the foot; Kwon denotes with the hand or fist; Do means an art, way or method. As several versions of Tae Kwon Do have evolved, "Chung Do Kwan" (Blue Wave) is used to specify the version organized by GrandmasterDuk Sung Son. Mr. Richardson seventh dan and local Master and founder of Northern Arizona Martial Arts, is a direct student of Mr. Son's and was president of the Chung Do Kwan Alliance, which preceded Chung Do Kwan USA . Lou Blazquez has also studied with Mr. Son and is student of Mr. Richardson.

Tae Kwon Do is a superb means of exercise equally suitable for men and women of all ages. Tae Kwon Do requires the body to move in all directions, and uniform physical development is one of the benefits of a regularly participating student. Other natural results realized by continued practice are increased self-awareness, confidence, and self-control. Improvement in school marks often occurs in young people studying Tae Kwon Do.
