ANNOUNCING NAMA SCHOOL OF CDK’S
FOURTH ANNUAL SUMMER CAMP
August 25th, 2011
Dear Martial Artist,
In 2012, Northern Arizona Martial Arts School of Chung Do Kwan will be hosting its fourth annual summer camp. It is our intent, through holding this event, to carry on the tradition of excellence set by Sensei Richardson during his “Challenge in the Pines” camps.
Dates: The camp will officially kick off Wednesday morning, June 27th, and will run through Saturday, June 30th, 2012. You should plan your arrival in Flagstaff for Wednesday morning workout, June 27th. If you wish to arrive earlier, be it a few hours or a few weeks, by all means come ahead. Just let us know, and we can advise you of local accommodations and pre-camp workouts.
Location: The camp will be held at Northern Arizona University just south of downtown Flagstaff, Arizona. Food and lodging will be provided on site at NAU. The lodging and workout facilities are very nice.
Transportation: There is a small airport in Flagstaff. The major city connection is Phoenix, Arizona. There is also bus service from Phoenix to Flagstaff by Greyhound. A variety of rental car companies operate out of both the Flagstaff and Phoenix airports. If you need transportation from the Flagstaff airport to NAU, please let us know your flight number and arrival time and we will have someone meet you.
About the camp: The actual training portion of the camp kicks off Wednesday morning, June 27th, and runs through Saturday noon, June 30th.
We are encouraging both youngsters and adults to attend this camp. Our camps are child friendly, and classes will be available for eight year olds and up. If you have children seven or under, they may stay with you in the dorm and eat for free, but you’ll need to bring their bedding (sleeping bag.)
Our itinerary should be extremely exciting, demanding and rewarding. Non-inclusive planned activities include running, stretching, calisthenics, Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jujitsu, forms workshops, bunkai, one and three step sparring, freestyle sparring, and self-defense. Balintawak, Control Techniques, Yoga, Kendo, Taiji and more may be offered depending on instructor availability.
The tentative daily schedule Wednesday, Thursday & Friday will be:
0730 - 0900 - Run, stretching and Chung Do Kwan workout
0900 - 1000 - Breakfast and rest period
1000 - 1200 - 1st workshop
1200 - 1330 - Lunch and rest period
1330 - 1500 - 2nd workshop
1500 - 1530 - Rest period
1530 - 1730 - 3rd workshop
1730 - ???? - Evening meal and free time
1845 - 2045 - Wednesday NAMA Chung Do Kwan practice at NAU
Saturday testing and demonstrations begin at around 2 p.m. The demonstration will be followed by a hosted dinner.
Sunday, July 1st, is a tour and departure day not associated with the camp. The Grand Canyon is just 80 miles away and there are many other sites (Meteor Crater, Anasazi Ruins, etc.) within easy driving distance. We will be happy to assist you with any lodging or transportation arrangements.
Promotions: Instructors - please let us know a couple weeks prior to camp how many tests, by belt grade, you will want conducted. If a student’s instructor is not present, the student will need a signed letter of recommendation from the instructor prior to testing. Instructors from other organizations and disciplines are welcome to conduct promotion testing of their students at this time with prior notification to the camp director.
We feel it is appropriate that each person promoted be presented with their new belt immediately following testing time, so please bring what belts you will need for your students or, if you wish, we can provide them at $10.00 each. Just let us know the color and number needed well ahead of time.

Some notes from the camp director:
1. This is a high altitude (7,000 ft elevation) martial arts training camp. The curriculum is physically demanding and purposely designed to help each participant reach a personal best. All participants should be in good physical condition upon arrival. If in doubt, start your conditioning training NOW! It is recommended you obtain a thorough physical from your physician prior to attending camp.
2. As stated above, children 7 and younger may stay in the dorms with families at no cost and eat for free, but need to bring their own bedding.
3. Pets – NAU will not allow pets in the dorms or on campus.
We look forward to sharing a mutually beneficial experience with you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our camp director, Brad Bransky, 4th Dan, at (928) 266-5320, bradb42@yahoo.com. You may also contact Scott Hoefle, 2nd Dan, (928) 266-2546, scott.hoefle@nau.edu.
Yours in the Martial Arts,
